Frequently Asked Questions
About Adult Classes at The Peaceful Dragon
What should I wear to class?
Your Peaceful Dragon uniform which you received when you signed up: white
t-shirt, black pants and red sash. Wear any athletic shoes of your
choice as long as they have non-marking soles. No jewelry of any type
is allowed for the safety of yourself and your classmates.
Why are there different color uniforms?
The white uniform shirt that you received when you joined lets us know
at a glance who is new to the class. The black t-shirts with red
sleeves show who the instructors are in each class. Black and red
t-shirts are the uniform colors for the Disciple/Mastery Programs.
Which classes can I come to?
Your first class will be your scheduled New Student Orientation Class on
Monday. After that, you will come to either your two Shaolin
or two Tai Chi classes per week, depending on which program you signed
up for.
Can I come to more classes if I want to train more?
Yes, after you pass your first testing and promote from Block A to Block
B (usually in about two or three months) you are eligible to be invited
to move from the introductory program to one of our regular memberships,
either the Disciple or the Mastery Program. Once you are invited and
join one of these two programs you will be able to expand your training.
Testing and promotions, what is that about?
To ensure your optimal progress and monitoring, we have scheduled
testing at which we promote students to the next level. The levels are
Blocks A, B, C, and D. This is detailed on the Members Section of our
website, which you need to read thoroughly.
How do I find the Members Section of the website to learn more about my
program and the curriculum that I will be learning?
Go to
http://www.thepeacefuldragon.com/students.shtml. At the Members page
you will find orientation, the curriculum and much more. Reviewing this
thoroughly will be essential for your progress.
Where do I put my belongings when I come to class?
Clothing and gym bags can be left on the shelves in the changing rooms.
Leave valuables locked in your car, or you can bring them into the
classroom with you. The Peaceful Dragon cannot be responsible for lost
or stolen items. Please do not leave anything unattended out in the
common area for any reason. Remember to turn cell phones and pagers off
before class.
How does the attendance system work?
In about two weeks you will receive your membership card in the mail.
Every time you come to class just scan your card on the computer by the
left door to studio A (the big room) and it will keep track of your
attendance.
Do I need a yoga mat for my class?
For yoga classes, yes. It's optional for Tai Chi and Shaolin kungfu
classes, though many people like having one for the floor section of the
warm-ups. For the meditation class it is best for your practice for you
to have and bring your own meditation cushion so that you can find a
comfortable position. We have mats and cushions for sale for your
convenience.
Should I practice outside of classes?
Yes, this is very important. It doesn't matter if you want to get in
better shape, to be more flexible, to become a better fighter, or to
learn to deal with stress and become more focused, daily practice will
help you reach all of your goals.
What happens if I have to miss a class?
We have an open make up policy, which means that you can make up missed
classes by attending any other class time that you like. However, it is
important to let your instructor know if you're going to miss class, and
we ask that you reserve make-up classes for true emergencies or
circumstances beyond your control.
If I am feeling some soreness and discomfort, or I have an injury,
should I still work out?
Yes, of course you should. Some soreness and discomfort at first are
not only normal, but they are a good sign that you are challenging your
body to get stronger and healthier! However, you may need to modify or
skip certain exercises or routines that aren't appropriate for you due
to any specific physical issues you may have.
If I want to get additional information on the arts that I study, what
should I do?
Read! Read! Read! We have an in-house library with many great books,
a book store on our website, and our Grandmaster's website
has many excellent articles as well. Master Sbarge has selected books of interest,
listed on our books page. Also, the Internet has an
unlimited number of articles and web pages - just don't believe everything
you read!
I understand that there are monthly online lessons that I will receive
from Master Sbarge. Am I required to do them?
Yes, they are part of the curriculum here and required to promote.
Aside from this, they are very popular amongst our students and will
enhance your experience here immeasurably. In about a month you will
receive your first online lesson. Simply complete it and send it in to
Master Sbarge for review, and keep a copy in your own files.
What if I want to step out during class or leave early?
Please do not leave class unless you have a serious reason to do so. We
do not want people casually coming and going during class. If you have
to leave, it is very important for you to ask the instructor first and
tell him or her why. This is both good manners and for your safety.
Should I come if I'm late for class?
Make every effort not to be late for class. If you are late for some
unavoidable reason, of course come to class. Simply bow to the
instructor and let him or her know what happened as soon as the
opportunity to do so without disrupting class presents itself.
Teaching - who can teach?
Other than Master Sbarge, only appointed instructors can teach and only
in their appointed class. These will be the people wearing the
two-toned red and black shirts. Other than this, do not teach anything
and do not ask anyone to teach you anything. This is good manners and
also crucial for your progress so that you receive proper instruction in
the material.
The above questions should be helpful and already cover a lot of ground.
Learning, however, takes time, and so don't be in too big of a
hurry - enjoy the process of learning.
Good luck and enjoy yourself!
