Parents' Night Out - Board Breaking!

This month's theme for Parents' Night Out is always a favorite. During martial arts demonstrations, audiences have long been fascinated with board breaking. Children will learn self-control, build confidence, and amaze themselves and their parents when they learn to break both single and multiple boards.

Under the watchful supervision of our Children's Program instructors, children will learn proper kung-fu striking fundamentals, how to accelerate their speed, increase their power, and develop mental focus. We will begin with practicing on the plastic, reusable boards. Then, everyone will have a chance to break wooden boards (wooden boards are only $1 each).

Friday, April 24, 7:30-8:30pm and Saturday, April 25, 10:30am-3pm
Women's Self-Defense Lecture and Workshop

Peaceful Dragon instructor Lyn Addy will present a FREE lecture on “Self-Defense for Women: How NOT to be a Statistic” on Friday, April 24 at 7:30pm. The lecture is open to the public.

The next day, Saturday, April 25, Lyn is offering a comprehensive workshop on self-defense for women from 10:30am-3:00pm.

Lyn notes some criminals especially like to prey on women, considering them to be easy targets. "Too many women simply have no idea how to defend themselves should the unthinkable occur," says Lyn, who also has training in firearms. “Some women have a false sense of security thinking that the police, their husband or their boyfriend can protect them. What will you do if the police or your significant other isn't around when you're faced with a violent confrontation?”

The workshop is geared for all women, and will teach strategies, tactics and mindsets that virtually any woman can adapt to give her an advantage in a violent encounter.

Workshop topics will include:

  • The importance of awareness
  • How to be prepared, not paranoid
  • Confidence and control instead of victimization
  • How to safeguard your home
  • When to fight, when to wait
  • Sexual intimidation and acquaintance/date rape
  • Weapons and self-defense
  • What the law says

You'll also get hands-on training and practice in techniques against:

  • grabs (bear hugs, arm and clothing grabs, etc.)
  • chokes
  • strikes
  • being pinned against a wall
  • attacks from the ground

Lyn is the only woman fully accredited by the American Center for Chinese Studies to teach all the martial arts disciplines offered. She has been active a teacher and student of martial arts for most of her adult life.

Prior registration and tuition of $65 is required for the workshop. To register, call 704-504-8866 or register at the front desk.

World Tai Chi Day

April 25 is World Tai Chi and Qigong (chi kung) Day. This annual celebration takes place the last Saturday of every April. The Peaceful Dragon will recognize this event with free demonstrations and tai chi classes, Saturday, April 25 from 1:30pm-3:00pm.

April 25 is World Tai Chi and Qigong (chi kung) Day. "The idea of World Tai Chi and Qigong Day began a decade ago to inform people of the positive health benefits of tai chi," says Master Eric Sbarge. "All over the world, people participate in the annual celebration, called by www.worldtaichi.org as an "unprecedented…healing event." Those curious about tai chi as well as tai chi practitioners of all styles are welcome to attend The Peaceful Dragon's free event.

Master Sbarge says "Approximately twenty percent of the world already practices tai chi or qigong in some form, and in recent years, these practices have made their way to the West. What's more, modern science has begun to learn how tai chi can help reduce stress, improve a variety of health conditions, and even help people lose weight without stressing the body."
